The Games of Games Market Europe (GME)
The European trade show has come to an end for another year, and we take you through the best in the show.
Posted by John Grothier - Xbox,PlayStation 2,GameCube,PC - UK and Europe

After the huge spectacle of Game Stars Live this time last year we we're worried that this years show, Games Market Europe, might be a bit of a let down - and in truth it was. Just a fraction of the size and scale of the trade shows of last year, however, Game Market Europe did have a few gems - and we'll take you through our best in show.

  • Far Cry Instincts (Ubisoft)

Ubisoft easily had the best stand in the show and their upcoming first-person shooter was proudly on show. Although the screenshots of the game are truly beautiful, they really don't do the game justice - when you see Far Cry Instincts run on the Xbox it will literally blow you away. The graphics are absolutely stunning and the framerate did not seem to suffer at any point, and we gave this FPS a good going over. Not only will the single player campaign be a joy to play through, but with vehicles, turrets and traps, we think that the multiplayer will give Halo 2 a run for its money. Far Cry Instincts was easily the most impressive title of the show.

  • Peter Jackson's King Kong (Ubisoft)

Staying with Ubisoft the next large presence had to be Peter Jackson's King Kong. This epic title is based on the upcoming move from Lord of The Rings director, Peter Jackson. With this title the player will get to battle for survival on Skull Island in first-person as Jack Driscoll and also experience the staggering power of King Kong in third-person perspective, taking on massive beasts. The game has that Lost World feel to it and the graphics back that up with some moody lighting, fantastic environments and impressive weather effects. This game is also due out on the Xbox 360 - and we think this will be the version to watch out for.

  • Prince of Persia 3 (Ubisoft)

Kindred Blades? We still don't know the full title of this stunning sequel, but what we can tell you is that the Prince is back and he looks and plays better than ever. This new story will see a few dark twists thrown into the mix, as once again the Sands of Time are unleashed. True to the Prince of Persia franchise, the game provides a variety of action combat, agility and story-driven puzzles - all masterfully blended together into a rich gaming experience. This time around players will be able to wield the powers and weapons of two master warriors with different combat styles, attitudes, and histories. Definitely one to look out for.

  • Heroes of the Pacific (Codemasters)

One game that we we're looking forward to playing at the show was Heroes of the Pacific - and if did not disappoint. This new title from Codemasters lets players take part in War II's fiercest aerial battles and Heroes of the Pacific features airborne battles with up to an awesome 150 planes in the sky at one time - it's a really great looking game that also plays superbly. We play-tested at Pearl Harbour and it wasn't long before we found our wings and took down a few Japanese aircraft attacking the might of America. It's not too long before this one is released and although we played both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions, the Xbox seemed the most impressive with slightly cleaner and crisper graphics and a perfect framerate.

  • James Bond: From Russia With Love (Electronic Arts)

Although there was only a split-screen multiplayer on offer at Electronic Arts stand, we could not help but dive into the Bond universe all over again. The level we played looked like and abandoned subway or underground station, oddly full of dropped machine guns and grenades. The multiplayer is not quite GoldenEye on the N64, but it was playable and importantly fun, although we think it's the main story mode that will hold peoples interest in this Bond adventure.

  • Need For Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts)

Staying with Electronic Arts the other game that caught our eye was Need For Speed Most Wanted. We played the PlayStation 2 version of the game and it played like the other recent games ion the franchise - except this time you're chased by police cars. Although we were hoping for Burnout Revenge, which was nowhere to be found, we can at least look forward to another good game in the series, and again, we think it will be the Xbox 360 version that will stand out from the pack.

  • Nintendogs (Nintendo)

Who else but Nintendo would think of putting on a virtual dog show? This new title shows you a brand new way to play you DS, and develops the concept of the virtual pet by adding a whole new dimension of interaction. Players can actually touch and speak to their dog which, will in turn react realistically to this attention. We can't deny the cuteness of this title, it took us by surprise - we tried throwing a balloon for the dog - which it promptly burst and backed away with a yelp. Next we tried throwing a Frisbee, which our pup duly caught, and then rolled over expecting a rub on its tummy. We're not too sure if this will be a five minute wonder, but technically this title is superb.

So that's it for another year with a promise that Games Market Europe will be back at The Business Design Centre in Islington, London - next year. We did get to see an Xbox 360, and mighty impressive it is up close, although only the upcoming game trailers were shown at the show - but boy did they look good. But we left Game Market Europe looking forward to playing all of the games we've listed above, and rest assured we'll be back again next year.
