5th August 2003:
Good enough to eat?
Hannibal is coming to eat your hard drive this autumn.
Posted by Chris Barnett - PC - UK and Europe

Now that all of Thomas Harris's Hannibal books have been made into films it seems as though they are now going to get the game treatment, well Hannibal at least. But to clear things up, the game is based on the film by Ridley Scott, not the Thomas Harris novel on which the film is based. Confused? Well all you need to know is that the game is based on the film adaptation, which has a significantly different ending to the book (not that I am going to disclose either ending here, read and watch you lazy people!).

The game will be a first person shooter with the emphasis on action and investigation as you play Agent Clarice Starling (as played by Julianne Moore in the film). Such is the divide in the two styles that the game will have two types of gameplay:
  • The investigation part, where the player must perform duties of real FBI agents such as infiltrations, arrests, interrogations and analysis of forensic evidence.
  • The action part, where the game switches to first person mode for a highly detailed and scripted collection of scenarios. These will involve various dangerous criminals, including Dr. Lecter.

There are no details on whether the investigation sections will be in FPS mode or not so it is unknown how the listed actions will be performed. As the film was not very well received by critics on the whole, it seems unusual to make a game based upon it. But from the information released so far it seems as if developer and publisher Arxel Tribe is attempting to avoid the cliche of FPS games by trying something different.

Just a minor point to end on though: the screen shots appear to have nothing to do with the film at all! We will keep you updated on this interesting prospect in the run up to its release in November.
