It seems that Freelancer, the space-trading game which was released earlier this year, has sparked a bit of a revival in the Elite genre. Those who remembered David Braben's original trading sim loved the RPG, commerce and action of the Microsoft game, and now other companies are wanting a slice of this rejuvented market. One of the major contenders has to be EgoSoft with X2: The Threat, which looks as if it may well surpass Freelancer in terms of graphics and gameplay.
The story is an intriguing one - you are a space pirate, who has been caught trying to steal a ship and has been sentenced to a lengthy stint on a penal world. However, instead of serving hard-labour you've been offered a deal whereby you work for a haulage company called TerraCorp. As you begin your new life transporting goods your past begins to catch up with you, and a complex adventure unfolds involving the discovery of a new race with destructive intentions.
It certainly sounds an interesting game, and with the promise of a massive Universe to explore, filled with ships and spacestations offering a wealth of commodities to trade, weapons to buy and races to make contact with, this should definitely be one to watch out for. It's currently set for a UK release on the 24th October, and we hope to have a trailer video for you next week! In the meantime, check out the smooth graphics in this latest batch of screenshots.
