GSC Game World is currently developing a FPS game with a difference. That difference is that it actually sounds interesting and original, so much so that the plot sounds as good as anything Hollywood has offered recently.
The game is set around 4 years after an explosion in the Chernobyl area that took place in 2006 (so that means it's set around 2010). The area is renamed The Zone and quarantined by the military for safety and perhaps for other reasons. But as with every cornered off area, some people want to go there (if you have ever witnessed a child climbing a fence that is labelled 'No Climbing, or swimming in a body of water signed 'No Swimming' will no what we mean) and these people are known as stalkers. They venture into The Zone to recover information, technology and artifacts that have been left there, with the military and army attempting to prevent them.
The player takes control of one of these stalkers with the burden of stealing and trespass the least of their problems. Mutants and environmental hazards will be encountered in addition to the forces already mentioned, but the main task will be to unravel the mystery of what happened to Chernobyl.
Now if that was the plot or idea behind a movie, you would probably want to see it, right? So the fact that it is a game is even better, especially as the details surrounding gameplay are equally as interesting. The area of the game will span 30 square kilometres, offering non-linear exploration and vast open areas. In addition to this world the game will offer a collection of over 30 weapons and powers, including gravitational and psychotropic weapons, telekinesis and telepathy. The weapons will be able to be traded as well as equipment and vehicles allowing strategy to be used when tackling the different types of enemy and creatures. And there will definateley be need for such caution as the AI of creatures will allow them communicate and perform pretty much any ability that the player can. But the most interesting feature announced is that of a true life environment that changes and 'breeds' as you play. This is so ambitious that GSC are claiming it makes the game endless in replay value, since the game will never be the same on any two occasions.
If all this has interested you then you will be disappointed to find that the game will not be out until the second quarter of 2004. Until then we will keep you updated and you can check out the screens we have for you now.
