26th August 2003:
EA to diversify
EA plans to develop more region specific sports games.
Posted by Chris Barnett - Xbox,GameCube,PlayStation 2,Game Boy Advance,PC - UK and Europe

In a recent interview with the New Zealand Herald, EA Sports co-founder and vice president of marketing, Don Transeth has said that the publisher is keen to adapt to suit a wider audience.

Having already took the step of abandoning physics somewhat in it's Big series of games, the publisher is now looking at ways to appeal to markets as wide as from Japan to the UK. This could involve Sumo games as well as more cricket titles. Whilst no such titles have yet been announced it would be great for the industry if more sports could be covered by games, not only for entertainment's sake, but for education too. Gamers could be taught the exact rules of a sport such as Sumo wrestling whilst enjoying themselves, and with EA Sport's excellent track record of bringing untried ideas to games (who could forget the multi tap for the Mega Drive, or the pure adrenaline physics of SSX?) we could see some games that we didn't even imagine would ever happen.

Let's just hope that these details are a hint of what we may see at the ECTS on EA's stand next week. Regardless of what happens though, we will let you know.
