25th September 2003:
Manhunt is coming for you
Manhunt is a hunt-or-be-hunted game from the makers of the Grand Theft Auto games. Take a look at these screenshots as this could be a game to remember...
Posted by Chris Barnett - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

With the task of following up a controversial (read 'popular') game such as Vice City, Rockstar need something that will take the shock value up a level, and that's what they aim to do with Manhunt.

The game will be released on the PlayStation 2 this autumn and has been kept under wraps (there was a teaser website that simply had the word 'Manhunt' and some rumbling sounds for about two months) to create a strange type of hype.

The game is a third person game set in the future where violence rules and death sentences are perfectly routine. You play a guy, James Cash, who is executed for murders he committed. Well in a way. He does not die when a lethal injection is given to him, so he escapes and goes on the run, only to be pursued by several gangs with the one simple objective - to kill him.

Whilst this may sound pretty scary, it gets better. The world in which the game is set is fitted with cameras covering most areas and a TV producer known as 'The Director' monitors every move using them. Everything that you do is seen by him, but instead of cheating you and simply telling the gangs where you are, he says nothing and lets them hunt you down using their own perceptions. Each time a kill is made, either by you or by another person (we can't really say by 'the enemy' as the whole world is against Cash due to his terrible crimes), it is shown from a grainy camera on TV.

Imagine the film 'The Running Man' with a masochist as the director and you may be on the right track. Weapons will take the form of anything you can get your hands on; a plastic bag, a piece of wood and a handgun are just three of the many possibilities, forcing strategy to be used. For example, to kill with a plastic bag will require stealth and knowledge of the surroundings; if you know that you have a gun and another person does not, you can shoot at them through a gate or fence, safe in the knowledge that they cannot get to you.

Since the game has been so tightly guarded, we are pleased to give you the first 10 proper screenshots to show the impressive and original nature of the game. Be warned though, the game is definitely going to be an 18, so the shots should not be viewed by anyone under that age really, unless you want nightmares.
