Despite being one of the nation's favourite things, there have been no real games based upon the Beano. And in the sense of the classic saying, "You wait for one comic book to be made into a game and then two come along in a racing game".
Not only does Beanotown Racing let you play as all the popular Beano characters, it also lets you play as Dandy characters too. This may not sound too exciting to the uninitiated, but to a fan of the comics (we stand guilty as accused) this is like winning some form of lottery.
Not only will the game allow you to play as the characters from the comics, the tracks will also be based upon locations from them. Some of the locations will actually elaborate what is shown in the comics, so you will get to see more of Beanotown than you will have ever seen before.
In true cartoon racing style, the vehicles will be varied and powerups (such as speed boosts and wepons styled in the comic-violence way) will be collectable.
It is a shame that the shots do not look too impressive, but this is only the first look we have had at the game ahead of its 7th November release date. So with a bit of luck the graphics could be improved and this game could be made as good as it should be. But that is one of the problems with a licence with such a reputation, you expect the game to live upto the subject matter, and in this case the game would (in our opinion) have to be at least as good as Mario Kart in order to do the comics justice.
Whilst the game may not live upto this high goal, it could still be a minor classic and we look forwards to the release nonetheless.
