2004 is Here...
FIFA 2004 that is. And it looks good.

Today sees the release of the yearly version of EA's FIFA on the three consoles. But this year it has undergone a larger transformation than usual, especially on the PlayStation 2 where it is network enabled. That means that you can actually (for the first time on a console football game) play the game against real people on the internet, provided you have a network adapter.
Whilst this is not new information as it was planned as an online game long ago; we were doubtful that the feature would be enabled on the finished UK version as Tiger Woods 2004 was taken 'off line' just before its release. But it has gone ahead and it looks set to offer both individual matches and special tournament events (mini cups and leagues).
For all versions of the game there has been a graphical overhaul and there is a new 'off the ball' control where you can control a player who is, funnily enough, off the ball. This off the ball feature is a really big thing as far as gameplay goes as it actually allows overlaps and teamwork to be controlled directly, where usually (in football games) the player is forced to press a through ball button and hope for the best. This is in fact a a feature that could, in the eyes of gamers who like full control over events, give the game the edge over Pro Evolution Soccer 3.
Of course, Pro Evolution is only a competitor on the PC (which version is out on the 7th of November along with the GameBoy Advance version) and PlayStation 2, which are the two platforms to offer full network play. So no matter how good Pro Evolution may be, FIFA will be the only option for those wanting full online features (which even allows updates of squads to keep things up to date).
We will bring you our verdict on the PlayStation 2 version and its online features sometime next week when we have had chance to play our copy, but we will also play the XBox and GameCube versions too just to give you a summary of the different versions.
