5th September 2002:
Game On moves to Scotland
After a successful four-month period in London, the videogames history exhibition is moving to Edinburgh this October
Posted by Marc Hull - Xbox,GameCube,PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

Game On is the UK's first major event that has focussed on the history of videogames, starting from when Computer Space, the very arcade videogame, was created by MIT student Steve Russel on punched paper tape, right up to present day and beyond, looking into what games will be like in the future. After being based in London's Barbican Centre for nearly four months, the show's now moving to the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, Scotland where it will open on the 18th October and run until the 2nd February 2003.

The show follows the videogaming industry's colourful history, starting with vintage arcade titles such as Pong and Space Invaders, then moving onto the first home consoles, describing the range of machines produced by Atari, Sega, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft over the last 30 years. The exhibit features many cabinets that will allow visitors to play on some of the early games consoles, including the first one made for the home - the Magnavox Odyssey.

The exhibition also has sections describing how the various gaming genres have appeared over the years, an area describing how games are made and marketed, and even how gaming is different in the various regions of the world. However, for the more modern gamer, the show also delves into the future, including a look at Sony's new Eye-Toy peripheral that allows PS2 games to track movement, so you can interact with them without having to use a control pad!

If you haven't yet checked out the event in London then you still have a few days left before it closes on the 15th September. However, for those eagerly anticipating the event's arrival in Edinburgh, you'll be pleased to know that a special preview showing of the new Tomb Raider game, Angel of Darkness, has been included just for the Scottish show. For more information, be sure to check out the event's website at
