Mario Sunshine delivers in America
Nintendo of America claim that it's beaten initial sales of both Halo on Xbox and GTA3 on PlayStation 2
Posted by Marc Hull - GameCube - United States of America

While European territories are waiting in eager anticipation of the 4th October, when we'll finally get our hands on the latest Mario adventure, those lucky Americans have been busy playing it for over 10 days now, and Nintendo of America has happily announced their sales report for that period. Fortunately, it seems that Mario hasn't lost his touch when it comes to generating a marketing whirlwind, and the game has already shifted 350,000 units since it's release!

The moustached plumber has also been held responsible for a leap in hardware sales during the 10 period, in which some retailers reported that twice the number of GameCubes flew off the shelves in that week compared to previous figures. On average, Nintendo believes that there's been a 50% increase in GameCube sales so far, which they've attributed directly to the game's success.

Even the title's predecessor, Mario 64, which was heralded as one of the best videogames of all time, has had its sales rate bettered by Sunshine. "So far, sales rates for Super Mario Sunshine are running 36 percent ahead of even Super Mario(R) 64 six years ago -- and that game went on to sell more than 10 million units worldwide.", said Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America.

We hope that Mario Sunshine generates the same level of interest here in Europe when it launches in just under a month's time. Having played the American version recently at ECTS, we can safely say that this will be an all-time classic that will definitely satisfy fans of Mario 64, so if you haven't pre-ordered your copy yet, get yer skates on!
