Gradius V Update
The horizontal scroller is back, slicker, bigger and meaner than before.
Posted by Chris Snook - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

They say that things run in cycles, such as seventies nights, Cliff Richard number ones and old game genre's. Now Konami are hoping to kick start the good old fashioned horizontal scrolling blasters the same way that Ikaruga did for their vertical scrolling cousins.

Gradius is back and this time it has a big V.

Konami have released a few more details about the update to their classic series and have released eight more screenshots to make our mouths water. The gameplay is nice and simple and consists of blowing up waves and waves of enemies and collecting power-up items to improve your craft, the Vic Viper - there a whopping sixty of these, spread over five weapon systems each with twelve different add-ins no less. All this has been blended together with the graphical power of a modern console to produce an intense looking experience and a damn pretty one too. The AI unsurprisingly has been boosted, with end of level bosses, seven of them, all ready to turn your craft into space dust.

One to look out for, for those old time gurus of shoot-em ups and the new breed of hotshot joypad jockey.

Out later this year.
