Nintendo has announced details of its new console, ending months of speculation about what it may be. The Nintendo DS, as it is temporarily called, will be released world wide at the end of 2004. The interesting thing about the console is that it will have two screens, yes, that's right, two independant screens.
The full details (hopefully a prototype) will be unveiled at the E3 show later in the year, but there are enough facts to keep us interested in the meantime. The two screens will each measure 3" and will be TFT flatscreen panels. It will also have a semiconducter memory of 1 Gigabit. Another interesting point is that it will have dual processors, so each screen will have it's own unique program of actions (so action on one screen will not result in slowdown on the other).
Despite announcing the console, Nintendo is keen to give full backing to the existing Game Boy Advance still, claiming the new format will be an entirely new venture for gamers to experience. Whilst this sounds like gossip, it is entirely true and the potential is massive. Games will be able to be played from two angles without compromise and unique games will be possible (imagine an RPG where you see the character's emotions on one screen and their moves on another).
All we can say is, wow! We can't wait for more details, but you will get them as soon as we do.
