The Invaders are coming.
Space Invaders. The game which started it all is set to return, both in the arcades and in a special compilation.

History buffs will know this. Twenty-Five years ago the first ever real co-op sensation began. Space Invaders was released by Taito Corp. and the world was altered for ever. Now to celebrate that fact Taito are re-releasing the original game into the arcades for a singular blast from the past.

However there is more. Since the original various other versions have been produced and this Spring nine of these will grace the PlayStation 2 in all their glory. The games range from the original 'upright' version to the tabletop version and a number of variants on both of these, including a version that is 'Verses Mode' and Space Invaders 3D.

Empire's CEO, Ian Higgins is to say the least excited; "The Space Invaders franchise is a recognised global brand with proven mass market appeal. The original game was at the forefront of the development of the video gaming industry and an anniversary edition has already proved a hit in Japan since it was re-launched before Christmas. We believe that Space Invaders Anniversary has the potential to be a big hit with gamers once again and we look forward to working with Taito to achieve this."
