30th January 2004:
Can you shine as Riddick?
Vin Diesel's anti-hero from the film Pitch Black makes his console debut in The Chronicles of Riddick.
Posted by Chris Snook - Xbox - UK and Europe

The film Pitch Black was an unexpected success it catapulted Vin Diesel into the big time due to his role as the escaped convict Richard B. Riddick. A second film was inevitable.

The game itself is a prequel to both movies and details out the history for Riddick as given in Pitch Black. The story begins with the convicted felon arriving at the only triple-max rated prison facility and follows his attempts to escape, his meeting with Pope Joe - the doctor who 'shined' his eyes so that he could see in the dark near perfectly and his relationship with the bounty hunter Johns.

Billed as a first person action/stealth/adventure game by Starbreeze, CoR packs a lot of new stuff in and it should do after nearly two years of development. Per-pixel shading, dynamic light effects, ragdoll physics and normal-mapping have all been crammed in along with support from the actors involved in the game including Mr. Diesel himself. Above all are the tricks that can be played with the 'Shine Job' on the anti-hero's eyeballs. The most obvious of which is to shoot out the lights in an area and go on a little killing spree with the guards.

Lars Johansson, the producer of CoR at Starbreeze has given a quick rundown on the type of action to be seen. Get to the Mainframe! Riddick has to break out of a heavily guarded prison area, in order to get to a DNA Sampler machine that will allow him to use the prison assault rifles, which are DNA encoded - and shock anyone who isn't in the system. This will involve fighting and brutalizing other inmates, trading money for prison weapons, killing guards for access codes, sneaking through monitored areas, and eventual firefights with legions of prison guards that sadly don't know they're already dead!

The Chronicles of Riddick currently does not have a release date but a close launch with the film is a good bet.
