Burnout 3 screens
The hit driving franchise returns...but with some very bad news for Xbox owners.
Posted by John Grothier - Xbox,PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

Electronic Arts have snapped up the rights to publish Criterion Games' Burnout 3. The latest title in the series is slated for worldwide release in September 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox - but Xbox owners will not get to race and crash online, thanks to EA's policy not to support Xbox Live.

'Burnout is already a hit arcade racing franchise and we are delighted to be working closely with Criterion to take the series to the next level in order to achieve the level of success that the series has always deserved,' said Bruce McMillan, of EA Worldwide Studios. 'With its action-oriented game design and remarkable production values, we believe that Burnout is a perfect fit for our racing game portfolio.'

'Working closely with EA's European Studio on the development of Burnout 3 is exciting for Criterion and the Burnout series. We are thrilled that the game will benefit from EA's development and publishing expertise that ensures a worldwide audience will be able to enjoy this phenomenal game,' said Fiona Sperry, of Criterion Software. 'We are confident that through this partnership, this fantastic game will be made even better.'

Burnout 3 promises to push the series even further, with a new feature called 'crash and burn' that uses a one-of-a-kind special effects engine that delivers spectacular visuals. The intensity heats up as players race, and often crash, their way through oncoming traffic in an attempt to claim the top spot. Burnout 3 will include multiple single-player, multiplayer and online crash and race modes for the PlayStation 2 only. As with the other Burnout titles, Burnout 3 offers players the opportunity to race through busy city streets and be rewarded for taking risks that result in heart-pounding action and electrifying crashes.

We spoke to Glen O'Connell, from Electronic Arts directly regarding the lack of Xbox Live play in Burnout 3 - 'We have a great relationship with Microsoft and more than 20 games in development for that system. Currently, in many major markets EA is the #1 publisher of content for the Xbox. However, EA does not build online capability into our Xbox titles because we don't believe the current business model put forth by Mircosoft is fair to third party publishers. We have a good dialogue with our partners at Microsoft and both sides feel the discussion is headed in the right direction.'

Look out form much more on Burnout 3 very soon, but until then we have these new screens for you.
