On Friday, also know as 'World Intellectual Property Day', ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association), decided to draw attention to a radical product that epitomises the ethos of creativity and innovation - Sony's EyeToy. Described as a true leap forward in home entertainment, EyeToy places you at the centre of a uniquely fun game experience. Using the EyeToy alongside the PlayStation 2 console, EyeToy puts the gamer into the thick of the action, where your movements, rather than a controller, allow you to play the game as though you were inside the TV screen. EyeToy is remarkably easy to play, needs no previous gaming experience and will get all family members out of their seats and playing some of the most enjoyable party games ever devised.
Michael Rawlinson, deputy director general of ELSPA, presented the Award for IP innovation and creativity to one of EyeToy's creators, Ron Festejo of Sony London Studio.
Michael Rawlinson, deputy director general of ELSPA, said:
"The British have come up with some great ideas in the past which have transformed our lives such as the computer by Charles Babbage, the hovercraft by Sir Christopher Cockrell, the steam engine by Thomas Savery which was enhanced by further development by Thomas Newcomen and James Watts and more recently Trevor Bayliss's Freeplay wind up radio. EyeToy is another fine example in this Great British tradition and it is a huge privilege to be able to present this award in recognition of World IP Day to mark this product's success."
David Wilson, Head of PR, Sony Computer Entertainment UK, said:
"EyeToy is a revolutionary technology that opens up PlayStation gaming to a much broader audience. It has been great for us to see such a broad range of people - over 3m so far - deriving so much fun from it. Anyone can EyeToy, it's as fun to watch as it is to play. In an industry that is perceived to thrive on sequels, it is great that ELSPA has chosen to honour us with an award for an original and creative IP that we are very proud to have produced."
EyeToy has won some very prestigious awards since its release last August, including a CESA award from Japan, an E3 innovation award from the US, an ECTS award, an Edinburgh Games Festival award, a pair of Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences awards, a pair of BAFTAs, a GDC spotlight award
a pair of Game Stars 2004 awards, and a pair of MCV Industry Excellence Awards.
Sony have already started working on EyeToy 2, which will be released near the end of this year.
