EA Renders a new beginning
The shift was subtle but profound as Criterion Software is bought out.

Electronic Arts today announced that they had bought the company that produces the technology that powers a number of today's top titles.

Renderware, the backbone behind the Grand Theft series, Call of Duty, the forthcoming FPS Black and both the Burnout and Pro Evo series, is the main gain for EA and places them in a commanding position.

"Criterion offers us studio talent and a proven management team, globally recognised intellectual property and technology infrastructure that will accelerate our readiness on the next generation of consoles," said EA chief executive Larry Probst.

And in the games world where costs are critical Renderware was one of the most used technologies to help produce the games. Which leaves other developers in the position of relying on a competitor to aid their own development cycles.
