Half-Life 2 goes gold?
It looks like it is full steam ahead for those who have pre-ordered as they get encrypted versions of Half-Life 2.

It is here. Sort of.
Encrypted copies of what is thought to be near finished versions of
half-Life 2
were released to those who are members of Valve's Steam service. Though as there is no release date as yet for the game itself there is no way to decrypt and play the versions being downloaded.
Also the 500MB file size, when compressed, is far, far smaller than many would have expected. Leading some to speculate that this is only the core element of the HL2 and that further chunks of code will need to be downloaded to fill out the unpacked size of just over 1GB - which is maybe about a quarter of the total size if recent titles are to be used as a guide. Other speculation is that it is merely the textures and audio files that have been 'released' and that there is no playable code whatsoever in the download.
This could be a two pronged strategy to prevent early pirate versions being loosed before Valve is ready for the official launch, which some analysts say could be as far away as November. Though others cite the download as a sign of imminent release. Valve also has been attacked for allowing the download but not the actual playing of any code yet.
In any event when Half-Life does explode out of the blocks expect
Silicon-Fusion
to let you know about it.
