Four years of intense, cutting edge development has taken place and finally, IBM, Toshiba and Sony have announced some of the specifications for the next generation CPU expected to power the PlayStation 3.
Whilst there are no images as yet and not that much in the way of details for the chip, codenamed 'Cell', what has been released is looking to be very, very impressive indeed.
The chip is said to be Multi Cored, that is it will behave as more than a single chip effectively all in one package, Multi-threaded so that it can handle more than one set of tasks at the same time and that it will use similar 64-bit technology to the latest Opteron and Itanium PC chips. It is also expected to operate more quickly too at about four thousand times the speed of the fasted PC CPU currently available. Also included are onboard features to protect against copying and the use of illegal software.
Cell it is anticipated will be the heart of more than just the PS3. Sony have stated a wish to see it present in the new High Definition Television sets and other home entertainment appliances, integrated and online and communicating with each other.
The PS3 is scheduled to be shown to the world next May, probably at E3 ready for a 2006 launch. More when we have it,
