StarCraft Ghost (TGS 2002)
The space-based strategy title returns, but this time as a 3D tactical-action game for consoles only!
Posted by Marc Hull - Xbox,GameCube,PlayStation 2,PC - UK and Europe

The original StarCraft was a fantastic isometric strategy game where you chose to control one of three vastly different races, build up an army, and then annihilate anything else on the map. However, after being released many years ago, a sequel was eagerly awaited but never announced, while Blizzard's other major strategy title, WarCraft, went from strength to strength. Fortunately, today the development team have rejuvinated their interest in the StarCraft series by announcing StarCraft: Ghost, a full 3D, tactical-action mix that will be released late next year. In a controversial move, this title will not be gracing PC owner's screens anytime soon, with only consoles being targeted for the time being.

The new game will be quite a departure from the old StarCraft that many know and love. Instead of an isometric strategy game, Ghost will be a third-person, mission-based action title. You take on the role of Nova, a lethal Ghost operative, who will work through a series of story-driven missions containing both planetary battles and solo operations. However, the game hasn't entirely cut its strategy ties, with a proportion of the missions requiring you to think about tactics, command your allies and coordinate large-scale attacks from the ground.

So far, a plethora of exciting features have been announced for the game, including Nova's wide range of abilities that include being able to cloak temporarily to sneak past guards, use electronic devices to lock-down and immobilise vehicles, and execute a large number of physical moves including scaling fences, hanging from wires, climbing poles and negotiating tightropes. The game will also contain a number of familiar StarCraft vehicles for you to take control of, as well as a big weapons list including the Gauss Rifle and Perdition Flamethrower.

Although PC owners may be disheartened by the move not to release the game on their beloved platform, it isn't all doom and gloom. Blizzard are excited about revisiting the StarCraft Universe, and are unlikely to stop after finishing Ghost. They're adamant that Ghost is not a sequel to the original game, and that instead they hope to do a full-fledged sequel for PC sometime in the future.

Blizzard have yet to announce which consoles Ghost will appear on, although from the sounds of things it's definitely coming out on more than one, and we'd expect the Xbox to be a prime contender. We hope to have more firm details about this potential big-hitter very soon, as more is revealed at this year's Tokyo Game Show.
