First Xbox PSO details (TGS 2002)
Sonic Team have leaked the first tiny droplets of information about their upcoming Xbox online RPG, including screenshots!

While there's no doubt that Sonic Team's commitment is currently with the GameCube, there was a glimmer of hope for Xbox owners when they announced on their site that a version of Phantasy Star Online would be gracing the powerful black console. However, it was only an announcement - the traditional PSO logo and a line of text - and that's how it stayed for oh so long, until now.
The Winter Tokyo Game Show has heralded the slow releasing of Sonic Team's tight grip on this game, with both new details and screenshots made widely available. Firstly, while the logo accompanying the original announcement was of the first version of PSO, the developers have quickly reassured everyone that Xbox owners will get episodes one and two in their version. Basically, this means that on top of the original Dreamcast game's missions and environments, you'll have access to whole new areas that, until now, had only been announced for the GameCube version. Also revealed were the first screenshots from the title, which further strengthen the idea that this is going to be a direct port of the GameCube version, with new curvy icons and all.
However, if there's one area in which the Xbox game has an automatic advantage, it's with the console's Internet capabilities. As you can probably guess from the title, Phantasy Star Online is mainly an online game, and so while GameCube owners will have to buy an extra modem to get full enjoyment from it, broadband Xbox owners can use their built-in ethernet card and probably enjoy a much smoother experience.
PSO for the Xbox is currently scheduled for release on the 16th January 2003 in Japan, so we expect a lot more information to be leaked in the run-up to that date. We'll be on-hand to report any news as it happens, but in the meantime check out these new (if rather small) screenshots.
