Posted by Marc Hull - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe Virtual On is Sega's robot (mech) battling series that first appeared in arcades back in 1995, and was quickly ported to the Saturn. The games have never been your traditional fighting fare - they bear more resemblance to Quake than most other fighters. Instead of viewing the action side-on, instead the camera would hover above the head of your mech, and you would have the ability to move forwards and backwards, rotate, strafe and jump, allowing you to easily maneuvre around each playfield and quickly target your enemy. The game actually turned out to be great fun, if a little frantic at times, and got a great reception in Japan. However, recent versions of the game (such as the sequel, Oratorio Tangram, which appeared on the Dreamcast) have never made the leap to European shores. Fortunately, that could change with the release of Virtual On: Marz. This will be the first game in the series to appear on the PlayStation 2, and with any luck, Sony should snap up the publishing rights for Europe. Announced at this year's Tokyo Game Show, details of the game are pretty scarce at the moment, although we do know that it uses an adapted version of the Virtual On 4 engine, which until now has only appeared in arcades, and unlike its predecessors this game will have a story that will unfold between battles. Sega have released an annoyingly small teaser trailer of the game, which unfortunately contains little of the new title.
