25th September 2002:
Project Ego becomes Fable (X02)
Lionhead's ambitious role playing game makes an appearance at X02 under a new name - five new screenshots inside!
Posted by Marc Hull - Xbox - UK and Europe

Inside the land of Albion, a dark force is gathering that can ruin villages and destroy the fairytale lives of all who live there. All the land's heroes have been turned into power-crazed maniacs, and since your father resisted the evil, your family has been taken. Only you have the ability to free them, and save the world. That's the story behind Lionhead's new role playing game for the Xbox, which was previously codenamed 'Project: Ego'. At Microsoft's X02 event the game's final name was announced as 'Fable', and we've got some great new screenshots to show you how it's coming along.

In the game, you start off as a youth, and as you progress your character grows in both abilities and appearance. Time will pass in the game, and not only will your character age, but also his appearance will change depending on the areas in which he trains. If you use weapons a lot then his muscles will grow and he'll begin to look strong, using the force of Will can make him turn wizard-like and wise, and having little respect for the other characters in the game will gradually make him look more evil.

Lionhead are using some of their famous Artificial Intelligence technology, which previously featured in Black and White, to make the experience as believable as possible. The characters who you meet in the game will all react to you in different ways depending on your appearance and abilities. The world in which the game takes place is also looking very impressive, with areas not only being highly detailed but also massive, including hidden ruins, huge towns, caverns and mountains.

Fable may be a little while off, with only the vague release date of 'sometime in 2003' revealed for Europe, but it's already looking like another classic from Lionhead Studios. We hope to have more information soon!
