In what has possibly proved to set the tone for the latest console war, Microsoft have stolen a march on Nintendo and Sony by unveiling their new offering a few days in advance, on MTV.
And to prove that gaming is Hobbit forming, Mister Frodo was on hand to present the half-hour long introductory program. Elijah Wood being a self confessed gamer and fan of the original Xbox.
Impressive is the word for how it looks, sleek, white and a thorough departure from the bulky, brick like original. With sweeping curves and a look that is reminiscent of a pillar as it is designed to stand upright looking good and cool as it does so.
The specs are equally impressive, if not quite as spectacular as many were hoping for. It features a multi-core 3.2 Gigahertz processor, powering a half of a Gigabyte's worth of RAM and an ATI Graphics processor with a clock speed of 500 Megahertz. There will be an upgradeable hard drive that is removable and three Universal Serial Bus ports to enhance connectivity. It will cope with all current formats of disc and since it is designed to be an integrated media operations centre the option to stream DVD's and music from a Windows XP based PC is included.
Games currently known to be in the works include Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo: Elements of Power and Call of Duty 2 as yet there is no indication as to what will be bundled on launch or what will be the 'Halo' for the 360.
The launch is due first in the States, then Europe and Japan, all apparently before Christmas this year.
The MTV show is due to be shown on MTV in the UK May 13th (Today) at 20:00.
