Three is the Magic Number (E3 2005)
The Cell has been opened and the latest generation of the PlayStation has been let into the lions den.
Posted by Chris Snook - PlayStation 2 - UK and Europe

Last week Microsoft got to show off, now Sony too has stepped into the limelight to show us that they have not lost the magic touch in the console arena.

Powered by the custom designed Cell central processor, the PlayStation 3 is an impressive beast, providing apparently twice the raw processing power than the 360 is the Cell, the all new digital heart for the PS3. Tag teamed with this is the RSX graphics processor, developed by NVIDIA especially for the new platform and memory developed by Rambus. All of which it is hoped will allow for a significant increase in quality of way we see on screen, with more realistic expressions, lip synch and better movement of human like bodies. It is also hoped that due to the once Supercomputer power that landscapes and everything within will be seamlessly integrated between game and video with no discernable difference.

Sony like its main rival is also pitching the PS3 a central part of any Multi-Media setup, by adding in one of the next generation DVD formats, know as Blu-Ray, whole movies will be able to be crammed onto one fifty-four Gigabyte disk and play those movies in High Definition formats, providing a clear home cinema experience. All with integrated Dolby 5.1 surround sound.

Further there are integrated Ethernet network ports, USB (Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 ports, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and support for compact flash media. There is also room for a notebook sized hard drive and wireless control via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Thus delivering a comprehensive media focal point.

Ken Kutaragi, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. made comment "SCEI has continuously brought innovation to the world of computer entertainment, such as real-time 3D computer graphics on PlayStation and the world's first 128 bit processor Emotion Engine (EE) for PlayStation 2. Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PLAYSTATION 3 is about to begin. Together with content creators from all over the world, SCEI will accelerate the arrival of a new era in computer entertainment."

We can expect to see further games in the Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy and likely further releases in the Grand Theft Auto and Electronic Arts Sports Series.

The PS3 is due for release next Spring.
