Super Sales for Mario and Nintendo!
175,000 Super Mario Sunshine units sold across Europe over first weekend.

Posted by John Grothier - GameCube - UK and Europe

Released last Friday, Nintendo's mustachioed platforming hero has finally made his way on to the GameCube. Super Mario Sunshine has smashed sales records, selling 175,000 units all across Europe during just the first weekend on sale.

Shigeru Miyamoto's lastest game takes the Brooklyn plumber to Isle Delfino, usually a sun-drenched resort, but someone has been creating a mess, someone with a round nose, a thick mustache, and a cap.... So Mario has been ordered to clean up the polluted island, clear his name and catch the real culprit.

Sales for the GameCube itself have also shot up with the help of the little plumber, now 1 in 5 people that own a GameCube already have a copy of Super Mario Sunshine. Many retail outlets are reporting a sales jump of around 50%, with harware sales across Europe averaging a 40% growth in total.

"Mario is spreading his sunshine across Europe, with sales of Super Mario Sunshine even eclipsing the sales of the hugely successful Super Mario 64 by around 3:1. This game adds to the already extremely impressive line-up of games for the GameCube, with even more excellent titles due to be released before Christmas. This console keeps going from strength to strength."
David Gosen, Managing Director, Sales and Marketing of Nintendo of Europe.
