New Dragon's Lair 3D screens
Guide Dirk the Daring through 3D landscapes for the first time in this update to the 1980's classic.

The original Dragon's Lair was like a playable cartoon, where you had to press buttons at certain points to advance the story. It may seem like an incredibly simple concept now, but back in the 1980's when it first appeared it was a whole new idea, and turned out to be an instant hit in the arcades. However, since then a lot has changed, and for THQ to bring the cartoon hero into the 21st century, they've fleshed him out in full 3D and given him the freedom to roam about the environments in any way he can.

Dragon's Lair 3D makes use of the cel-shading technique to keep Dirk's cartoon looks, and has over 150 animation sequences for him alone to make sure that the smoothness of the original is maintained. The castle in final game will contain 43 areas, which are split into over 250 rooms, with many of them being brand new. There will be over 40 different characters to interact with, including more than a dozen new ones, plus loads of power-ups, secrets and special features to be unlocked. The music is also being given the star treatment, with 60 original music scores to accompany the game, and Dolby Prologic Surround Sound compatibility.

With Don Bluth, one of the original game's creators, not only firmly behind this project but also providing the hand-animated intro and ending sequences, this looks to be on track to keep fans of the first game very happy indeed.
