26th July 2005:
Hit Animation For Game Boy Advance
Dreamworks will be bringing three of its greatest films to the new Game Boy Advance video format.
Posted by Chris Barnett - Game Boy Advance - UK and Europe

Majesco Entertainment Company has announced that it will be releasing Shrek, Shrek 2 and A Shark's Tale for the GameBoy Advance Video format. The release will be in partnership with Dreamworks, who handled the movie at the cinema and on home video formats. Whilst this may seem insignificant to begin with, these releases could change the whole nature of the Game Boy Advance video market.

Although Majesco developed the compression technology to convert movies and video into a format playable on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, not a single film has been released in the UK. That now looks set to change with the release of these three huge films this autumn.

Whether the playback will be in the same class as the PSP, which uses UMDs to play its films, remains doubtful due to the compression involved. But what this means is that all existing GameBoy Advance (and SP) and Nintendo DS owners will not have to purchase a PSP to play these films. If they are successful we may even see more titles released, possibly even adult films to compete with the PSP's range (it already has Kill Bill and Hellboy when it launches on September 2nd).

With this news, Dreamworks must be considering Nintendo as a serious contender for Sony in the European handheld war.
