PSP Advertising Dummies
Dummy packaging shows us that the boxes for your next generation games will not be ones to show the Grandchildren.
Posted by Chris Barnett - - UK and Europe

Sony have started their in-store mass marketing of their upcoming PSP console ready for the launch in less than one month. As the release is so soon, it is quite noticeable that Sony has left such advertising so late, but this should no affect sales as shops are reportedly postponing pre-orders already.

All GAME stores are now suspending allocation of their initial batch of PSP consoles after they supposedly 'sold out' of them. As we reported in an earlier story, most independent stores were already out of stock from the second they received their small stock allocation.

With these facts in mind it seems that the main purpose of the in-store advertising is to create hype for the second batch of consoles (those that have already pre-ordered the console will likely have already placed orders for games too), which they very likely will. As we have seen all the dummy boxes for the console and launch games we can admit that we are slightly disappointed with the artwork when compared to the Japanese and American versions. The Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racer packaging is particularly poor, the latter looking as if it is a budget release!

This package fiasco is always true for Europe though as the Japanese and American people get the better designs, we are left with the designs that resemble breakfast cereal advertising. Let's hope the games can exceed the packaging.
