If you were to ask the average gamer to name a weapons-based racer, they'd probably pick Wipeout, Extreme G or some other futuristic title. However, Microids has chosen a very different approach to the genre, by taking gamers back to the times of Ancient Rome, where the only racing was done in chariots. Ben Hur allows you to race around 17 different environments including Pompeii, Olympus and Circus Maximus, and includes 15 playable characters from 4 different civilisations. You'll be able to use a wide range of weapons, including javelins, axes, shields and swords, as well as cast spells to hinder your opponent's progress; by calling upon the power of the Gods, you'll be able to heal yourself, attack other chariots, set traps and upgrade your skill level. You'll even be able to customise your racer by choosing from 21 different chariots, with 21 different horses and 21 different wheels!
The game will contain a wealth of play modes to choose from, including a Training mode where you'll learn how to control your chariot, an Arcade mode for quick thrills and an Ascension mode where you live out a career. There will also be Arcade and Death Match multiplayer modes to allow you to race against your friends. Ben Hur is currently being developed for the PlayStation 2, and is scheduled for release before Christmas.
