Not to be entirely outdone by Microsoft and its great war machine marketing, Nintendo has sneaked a little Game Boy Micro announcement into the public domain. The details of the American launch have been finalised and we can tell you that it will be coming out on the 19th of September at the price of $99.
The European release date will be the 4th of November, and the price has been confirmed as £69.99. This effectively means that any potential buyers will have to sacrifice that mega box of fireworks for a simple 5-pack of sparklers or a box of the illegal yet tempting 'Chinese imports'.
Game Boy Micro measures just 4 inches wide, 2 inches long and 0.7 inches thin. It weighs 2.8 ounces, about the weight of 80 paper clips. Yet it boasts the same power as previous Game Boy Advance models, complete with the ability to play all Game Boy Advance games, a library of more than 700 titles. It features a 2-inch, crystal-clear screen, and Start/Select buttons that glow with the cool, neon-like blue found on many cell phones.
The console will also feature interchangeable face plates to allow 'crazy' designs to be applied to the poor thing. Expect chavs to decorate theirs with blinging patterns and pictures of Britney Spears. Actually, with the Xbox 360 also offering interchangeable faces, it could be seen that the true future of gaming lies with the ability to 'pimp up' your console, as I believe the kids say these days.
The success of the console should really be down to the number of people who don't own some form of Game Boy Advance already, especially as the DS can comfortable play existing Game Boy Advance games. True Nintendo fans will not be able to resist it (us, for example) and will chalk it up next to their limited edition Nintendogs DS that should be announced shortly after its release in the US and Japan.
