Tilting the Revolution
Nintendo Revolution rumours suggest that it may be a tilted year for the company in 2006.
Posted by Chris Barnett - Game Boy Advance - UK and Europe

The latest speculation involving Nintendo's upcoming Revolution console has been spread by an unknown source. The supposed leak comes from within Nintendo itself and is interesting to say the least. It concerns the controller for the next generation Nintendo console.

It has long been known that the 'revolution' of the title to the console refers to the controller, or rather, the control method, of the console. This came from a speech made by Shigeru Miyamoto, president of Nintendo Japan, at the E3 show. The latest speculation is that the controller will use tilting technology, similar to that used in the portable games Warioware! Twisted and Yoshi Universal Gravitation. The suggestion is that the wireless controller will be able to control games without the need for buttons or analogue sticks at all.

The possibilities of this are quite promising when you consider the fact that the controller will likely feature two analogue sticks too. This will allow an extra movement mechanism not yet seen in games, an added axis if you will. The former speculation of touch screen could also still remain true, so we could see a really spectacular culmination of Nintendo genius. Imagine a touch screen controller with no buttons, only an image on the screen of the buttons required by the game. Two sticks could then be used as well as the tilt mechanism.

The other part of this rumour is that the tilt mechanism will be coupled with a tactile feedback, or a rumble. This will allow a true 'feel' or gravity or tension to be experienced by players. Consider a game with varied terrain; say an off road racing game, where the different surfaces could have a heavier feeling to them through feedback alone.

At the moment this is pure speculation, but when you consider that Nintendo has been trialling tilt technology in its Game Boy Advance games and that the DS has often been branded as a 'sandbox' for technology - it seems realistic.

We will let you know of any more rumours or confirmations as we get them. Until then you can thank Nintendo for the genius of Nintendogs, which was released in America yesterday.
