Space Invaders evolves for the PSP
Space Invaders Evolution looks set to take you back; by utilising all the new features that were impossible when the original was released.

Rising Star Games has announced that it will release its first PSP game as early as November of this year. Not a company to shy away from the popularity of its licences, the game to introduce the company to PSP owners will be Space Invaders Evolution, an update of the undoubtedly classic Space Invaders.

Space Invaders Evolution encapsulates the Evolution idea by taking the original concept into a new dimension with its Future Mode. Here, the basic concept of Taito's iconic shooter is transposed, mutated and evolved into an entirely new game. By combining shooting with multiple viewpoints and incorporating some rhythm action elements to add an unexpected edge to the gameplay; Space Invaders Evolution marks a genuine evolution of the game design into a new concept only possible on modern hardware such as the PSP.

The basic premise of preventing an invasion remains the same, only this time the battle is fought in space with the player controlling a mobile cannon moving along an orbital path. The main objective is subtly different as levels are completed by destroying a rather large mothership, rather than simply clearing the screen of enemies as in the old game. The catch is that this crucially important vessel can only be harmed by executing special attacks fuelled by items gained from destroying waves of invaders that it constantly respawn.

With an all-new 3D engine giving the most modern representations of the little aliens yet, Space Invaders Evolution perfectly marries the potential of the PSP hardware with a conceptual collision of old and new, providing all the thrills of the arcade legend in its original form as well as revitalising the franchise with an original diversion from the well-trodden path of logical, progressive updates. However, there's more to the package as Space Invaders Evolution also features a now-standard classic mode as well as two additional multiplayer game types.

One of these multiplayer games can be played on one PSP by holding the console as if you were pulling a cracker (see the screenshots below for a better idea), so the PSP's widescreen is definitely put to full use.

We are excited about this one as it is nostalgic as well as innovative; a true credential for a winner. Let's hope it lives up to the legend when it reaches our planet in November.
