There are always endings within games, points where despite everything there is no real way to continue any longer. Endings are also what Civilisation IV is about as they reveal a few of the finalities on offer to the gamer.
As in the previous entries in the series there are a multitude of ways to 'win' in Civ 4. There are the good old favourites, Conquest and Timed out, where you either batter the world into agreeing you are the best or in the Timed variant, achieve the most and gain the highest score by 2050AD.
Further there is the Domination victory, where you control a set percentage of the world, gained by hook, crook or nuke and are acknowledged as master of all that you survey. There is also the Cultural Victory, for the more suave and sophisticated player, where you merely have to raise three of your cities to legendary culture status. Quite an achievement.
Space Race is as it says on the tin. Be the first to set up and plan and then execute a mission to Alpha Centauri to set up a colony and all the associated gubbins that goes with it.
Finally is an all new method of success, in Civ 4 you can pull off the rare in real life, Diplomatic Victory, where you are due to your negotiation and diplomacy skills elected to become the Secretary General of the United Nations. of course this time you will have an army that works.
Civ 4, with all the winning options is due out in a tad under a fortnight.
