Sega rethinks multiplatform strategy
Franchises like Panzer Dragoon and Sonic might well appear on all platforms in the near future...

Rumours are rife today that Sega are being forced to rethink their multi-format strategy after yet another downturn in profits. Although previously thought to have a rosy future after leaving the hardware market a couple of years ago, it seems that poor software sales in America are to blame for the Japanese company's misfortunes. Having spent an awful lot of money developing sports titles tailored to the US market, it's now apparent that they weren't recovering their development costs.

To solve this problem, previously exclusive Xbox, PS2 and GameCube games might be ported to other platforms, with the Xbox-exclusive title Panzer Dragoon being sited as a potential candidate. Other franchises mentioned include the Sonic series, which was thought to be GameCube-only, as well as Virtua Fighter which has so far only appeared on the PlayStation 2. The company also intends to stop producing its range of GameCube sports titles which have seemingly been overshadowed by Electronic Art's PlayStation 2 efforts.

While it's a shame that Sega is still suffering from financial burden, if it means more people get to play some of their top franchises then it's got to be a step in the right direction.
