15th December 2002:
Microsoft leak first Xbox 2 details
Breathe a sigh of relief if your Xbox is taking up too much room - Microsoft says the sequel will be smaller.
Posted by Marc Hull - Xbox - UK and Europe

This week the first details of the next Xbox were leaked by various sources in Microsoft's American and Japanese headquaters. Currently only known as 'Xbox 2', the console is said to be modelled on the current hardware's stylings, but be in a smaller case, possibly to suit the tastes of the seemingly unpenetrable Japanese market. A tentative release date has also been set as 2005, which we assume will be when the console hits America. Microsoft has previously said that they are keen to release the next Xbox before or very close to the launch of the PlayStation 3, which is also tentatively set for a 2005 release.

Rumours have been circulating for some time about the specifications of the new machine, although it's likely that nothing concrete will be announced for at least another year. However, with the development time of games spanning over two years now, we expect that Microsoft has a pretty good idea of the power of their next console, and that first-party developers such as Bungie and Rare have been given early specifications with which they can run tests on and begin developing possible launch titles.
