There's no doubt that the racing simulation market had been absolutely saturated with games ever since the Gran Turismo series became incredibly popular on the PlayStation all those years ago. However, with titles like GT3 and Sega GT 2002 being at the pinnacle of racing perfection, developers are having to be more inventive when creating new racing simulations in order to have even a small chance of nicking a slice of the consumer cake. So, enter TDK with their latest racing title, World Racing, which not only focusses on the Mercedes-Benz brand, but also contains 120 'fully accessible' tracks that allow you to deviate from the tarmac and go for a bit of off-road sight-seeing, where you might even find some handy short-cuts.
The game's environments, which are based on Nevada, Japan, Mexico, Australia and the Alps, seem to be a mix of highly detailed, Burnout-style cities, complete with traffic and even pedestrians, as well as sandy beaches and mountains that extend for miles into the distance. Also, even though the title contains only Mercedes-Benz cars, there are still 110 different models, including A to S classes, racing, vintage and prototype vehicles. There will also be an impressive range of play modes to participate in, including a wide variety of challenges to be completed in story, single player and multiplayer modes, with up to four players supported through split-screen play. The game's soundtrack is shaping up to be equally as impressive, with licenced tracks included from the Ministry of Sound.
All-in-all, World Racing looks like a very promising game, and these early screenshots show a lot of potential. If TDK can alter the slightly suspect pedestrians in the city sections and get the handling just right then the Xbox could well have another great racing game later this year. We hope to have further screenshots and details closer to the title's release, so stay tuned!
