It's difficult to underestimate the importance of platform games to consoles over the many years since videogames first existed. Not only have they helped consoles win incredible amounts of market share (in the case of the Megadrive against the SNES), but have also created some of the most memorable gaming mascots of all time, and taken the form of some of the greatest videogames in history (most notably, Mario 64). However, with many third party companies making their mark on the genre with titles like Jak and Daxter, Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet and Clank, Acclaim are trying to do the same by unleashing their latest videogaming hero, Vexx, onto the unsuspecting public in March this year.
With the potential to create a company mascot, Acclaim don't seem to be sparing any expense with this title. Not only have they commissioned their Austin Studio to develop the title, but the game is already sporting some pretty neat specifications, including day-to-night cycles with realtime lighting, loads of environment-based special effects like reflectoins, light glows and highlights, as well as dynamic meshes for clothes, hair and trees. The final game will span 18 levels based in highly varied settings, with a selection of hidden multiplayer modes to be unlocked as the player progresses through the game.
Vexx certainly sounds promising, although whether it can take on the might of other PS2 titles such as the excellent Jak and Daxter remains to be seen. However, you can bet that we'll be on the lookout for any further details and screenshots from the title, and will post them on the site as soon as we get them. In the meantime, why not check out our current selection of screens below.
