Id's Wolfenstein series is not only reponsible for practically inventing the first-person shooter genre many years ago, but also providing generations of gamers with a mean, Nazi-destroying streak that has made each title a massive success. However, whereas before this has been mainly a PC obsession, Id have now seen the potential of broadening one of their most successful franchises across all platforms, and hence the latest selection of offerings have been scattered across Xbox and PS2. Fortunately, though, they're not forgetting the game's roots, with the new 'squad-based' game, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, being a PC exclusive.
Unlike previous games that have been more of a 'one man army' scenario, Enemy Territory is centred around controlling both your own character and commanding a set of allies in an attack against the Third Reich. The single-player mode will consist of purely squad-based campaigns with settings that range from Western Europe to Egyptian deserts, while the multiplayer side of the game will feature both 2 player cooperative play and support for up to 64 players in an online deathmatch.
While Wolfenstein veterans may be concerned about this new direction for the series, it certainly sounds like a promising concept. We hope to have more details closer to the game's early 2003 release, but until then check out these first screenshots below!
