First screens of Splinter Cell for the PS2
One of the best Xbox games comes to the PlayStation 2, but can it retain the graphical shine of the original? Find out in these first screenshots.

Many regard Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell to be the Xbox's Metal Gear Solid, and for good reason; it is one of the finest stealthy action games to appear on any format. So, with Konami bringing MGS2 to the Xbox in the form of Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, it's only fitting that Ubi Soft are also porting their game to the PS2. However, whereas bringing something from the PS2 to the Xbox perfectly is possible due to the increased power of Microsoft's console, porting something the other way is far more difficult. So, can Ubi Soft find a way of bringing all the great lighting effects that made the Xbox version so good to the less-powerful PS2, or are sacrifices going to be made?

Fortunately, these early screenshots indicate that the port will be near-flawless. Sure, they might not have the smooth, anti-aliased look of the Xbox game, but as far as lighting and special effects go, they look pretty spot-on. Sam and other characters cast shadows as in the original, and both the night and thermal vision contain the cool interference effect. Whether or not the polygon count of the levels has to be lowered remains to be seen, but PS2 owners can rest easy in the knowledge that this game should both look and play very much like its Xbox brother.
