Splinter Cell is widely regarded as one of the best Xbox titles around, giving even the mighty Metal Gear Solid a run for its money. However, this March it is set to get even better, as Ubi Soft release hopefully the first of many expansions for the game downloadable via Xbox Live! Anyone who has a copy of Splinter Cell and the Xbox Live Starter Kit, which officially launches in stores on the 14th March, will be able to grab a whole new mission for the game for free! Entitled "Kola Cell", this mission will be about the length of a standard game level and will require Sam Fisher to use his extensive reportoire of gadgets and moves in order to complete it. "Ubi Soft would like to thank Tom Clancy Splinter Cell fans for their continued support and provide them a free downloadable mission that is just as exciting and intense as the original game," said Alain Corre, Managing Director of Ubi Soft Entertainment. "We are psyched that Xbox Live allows us to bring our best content directly to our fans."
Although downloadable expansions have been available for PC games for some time, this is quite possibly the first time it has been possible on a games console, mainly thanks to the Xbox's broadband connection and hard disk. This potentially marks a big step for console games, allowing developers to extend titles beyond the levels and modes on the disk, keeping gamers interested for much longer than a standard title by feeding them new content on a regular basis until development of a sequel has been completed. "We're pleased that this great new Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell level is going to be available right from the launch of Xbox Live," said Michel Cassius, European Director of Xbox. "This new content will extend the life of the game, adding more hours of playtime and more stealthy thrills and action. It's an excellent example of what Xbox Live gamers can expect going forward."
Although we have few details about how large the download will be and how long it will take to receive on a standard 512kbps broadband connection, with 14th March less than a month away we shouldn't have long to wait! In the meantime, why not check out these two screens of 'Kola Cell' which we managed to sneak out of Ubi Soft's HQ?
