5th March 2003:
First screens of Lionhead's The Movies
Ever wanted to create your own films without having to earn the million-pound budget first? Lionhead may just have the answer...

After the success of Black and White, many were left wondering what developer Peter Molyneux and his Lionhead Studios would produce next. However, like his previous game, we've had to wait quite a while for any firm details on his latest project, currently entitled "The Movies". Fortunately, though, its concept sounds as if it will follow the innovative and addictive style we've come to expect from the company, so it could once again be well worth the wait.

The basic idea behind The Movies is to run your own film studio and create movies throughout the decades from the 1920s to present day. To begin with, you'll have all the technical limitations that real movie-makers had back when film was just becoming popular, creating monochrome silent movies rather than the huge, special effect riddled productions that we know today, but as time goes on better technologies will open up to you allowing you more and more freedom. While we're assuming that the actual content of the movies you'll film are preset, the game will still allow you to choose scripts, directors, sets and stars, and eventually allow you to view your masterpieces on their opening nights. You'll also be in charge of budgeting, controlling celebrity egos and sorting out all the problems a standard production company goes through on the way to the top.

While it certainly sounds an ambitious idea, will Lionhead be able to pull it off? With the likes of Populous and Theme Park in Peter Molyneux's impressive development back-catalogue, it definitely sounds like the sort of game he could make work. "Peter is undoubtedly one of the most talented video game designers in the world, and Lionhead is one of the very few development studios with the knowledge and resources to develop a game that will allow players to fulfil the fantasy of building a movie empire," says Larry Goldberg, vice president of the game's publisher, Activision. "We are incredibly excited to have entered into this long-term partnership and are confident that this alliance will result in one of the most innovative and anticipated games of the next few years."

We're eagerly awaiting further information on The Movies, and will report it as soon as we get it. In the meantime, here are some early PC shots to take a look at.
