15th May 2003:
New F-Zero GX screens (E3 2003)
After a subtle name change, the GameCube's version of F-Zero is looking every bit as tasty as its arcade counterpart.
Posted by Marc Hull - GameCube - UK and Europe

After the success of F-Zero X on the N64, there was no way the GameCube could pass by the chance of updating the series again, and although it may not be a Nintendo development team working on this latest update, Sega's Amusement Vision studio seems to be doing pretty well with the game so far. Having dropped the more obvious 'GC' subtitle for a more stylised name; F-Zero GX has made an appearance at this year's E3 show, and early indications point to it being just as good as its arcade counterpart (running on the Triforce arcade board; a variant of the GameCube's architecture). Not only should this game contain the insane speeds of the N64 game, but also beef up the environments with much higher polygon counts than those seen in the previous titles, and all manner or special weather effects to give proceedings an extra edge of eye candy.

Although not sporting as many courses as the N64 version (with sadly no news on whether a random track generator will see a return), F-Zero GX will still contain a healthy 20 stages, with 30 different pilots to select. New to the series will be the ability to build your own craft by purchasing points gained through winning races, allowing you to create a custom vehicle to suit your particular style of play. These vehicles, and their components, can even be used in the arcade game, thanks to a memory card slot in the arcade cabinet. The idea is that only certain parts will only appear in the arcade game, so you'll have to play both to build the ultimate racer.

Also announced recently were the title's various play modes, which will include a Grand Prix option, Time Attack and Versus play, which encompasses a new story mode where you follow Captain Falcon as completes various challenges and missions. All-in-all, we can't wait to get our hands on this game, and with it currently set for an October release the wait shouldn't be too long. Be sure to check back on Silicon Fusion for more information closer to the game's launch!
