The original Pikmin may have seemed like a very odd and highly Japanese concept when it was originally announced before the GameCube launch back in 2001, but there's no doubt that once people started playing it they were quickly taken in by its simple yet highly addictive gameplay. So it's little surprise that Nintendo have been busy developing a sequel, which is set to hit European shores this November, and promises to build upon the original with a wealth of new features.
First and foremost, the storyline now revolves around collecting treasure buried beneath the planet's surface, so that Captain Olimar can save the company he works for from bankrupcy. This time, he's also bought an assistant to help him, who can be controlled by a second player in an all-new, split-screen cooperative play mode. The red, blue and yellow Pikmin of the original game will all make a return, but this time will be accompanied by as-yet-unannounced new Pikmin, which will each have their own special abilities. There will also be a whopping 60 different species of enemy characters, and randomly generated levels that ensure the game will last much longer than the first.
Although graphically Pikmin 2 remains much the same as its predecessor, simply the prospect of more of the same is enough to get us excited about this potential big-hitter. Be sure to check out the video and screenshots below, and check back on Silicon Fusion soon for more details!
