Konami unveils Metal Gear Solid 3 (E3 2003)
With hardly any build-up before E3, the next title in the highly successful action-stealth series has been announced!

When Metal Gear Solid 2 was announced during E3 back in 2000, it sent shockwaves through the games industry. The very first glimpse of the game, which was shown via a trailer video of almost movie quality, showed what the PlayStation 2 was really capable of. It also marked just the beginning of the marketing strategy Konami had planned for the game, which included a demo release with Zone of the Enders and strict secrecy about the title's main character. However, after spending so long developing and promoting the game, following it with a sequel was always going to be a difficult task, and there were even rumours that the game's producer, Hideo Kojima, was planning on ending the series there, or handing it on to someone else.
Fortunately, though, this year's E3 has dispelled those rumours by revealing the next episode, and possibly a new direction for the series. Snake is back, but this time in the jungle, having to fight not only enemy soldiers but nature itself. The brief video of the game which was leaked just before E3 began was far removed from that of Sons of Liberty; instead of revealing any plot elements it purely showed the location and some sequences of Snake firing various weapons at oncoming enemies. However, the screenshots reveal the true advancement over the previous game; the jungle setting is looking absolutely gorgeous, with trees and foliage modelled immaculately.
With little in the way of details or a proper trailer, we suspect that the game is still pretty early, and that much more will be revealed later on this year. After all, the low-key announcement and screenshots raise more questions than they've answered - what exactly is Snake doing in the jungle, and how does this tie in with Metal Gear? Whether this game will mark a change from the subtle stealth-based gameplay of its predecessors to a more action-orientated title remains to be seen, but you can bet that as soon as more details are released we'll be here to report them.
