Konami shows off Gradius V (E3 2003)
The next-generation update to one of the longest running shoot 'em up series is looking absolutely gorgeous - check it out in these new screenshots.

There's no denying that side-scrolling shooters are some of the most addictive and frantic videogames around; yet for some reason they are not only few and far between, but even when they are developed they often end up being released only in the East, forcing gamers to foot for import costs. Fortunately, this will not be the case with Konami's Gradius V, a next-generation instalment in one of the longest-running, classic arcade shoot 'em up series'.

While it may be based on an arcade classic, Gradius V looks an absolute treat, putting many modern titles to shame. In a similar vein to Ikaruga (a recent side-scroller on the Dreamcast and GameCube), while the gameplay remains entirely in 2D, all the ships and backgrounds are fleshed out entirely in 3D, with many of the backdrops moving and rotating around you as you play. However, the visual feast is to be found in the weapon effects, which look absolutely spectacular. We're talking bullets that fill the screen, lasers, explosions and all kinds of wonderful lighting effects that your little craft will be frantically trying to avoid. If a shooter was judged simply by the sheer amount of on-screen action at any one time (which isn't far from the truth) - this would probably win hands down!

With 12 upgradeable power-ups promised for the final game, and a whopping seven stages (each complete with mandatory massive boss encounter) to work through, Gradius V is well worth watching out for when it hits shelves this Winter. Let's just hope that it gets the mainstream sales that it deserves, so that more of these types of games appear in Europe in the future!
