New Mario Kart details (E3 2003)
We have new screenshots, a trailer video and information on what could well be THE multiplayer game of 2003!
Posted by Marc Hull - GameCube - UK and Europe

Mario Kart has graced most Nintendo consoles since its first appearance on the SNES, and which each incarnation has been quite different in places, all have shared the feature of being immensely fun multiplayer titles, and that doesn't seem set to change with the latest instalment; Mario Kart: Double Dash on the GameCube! This time, each kart won't just be manned by a driver, but also a second character who will fire weapons and generally make life as difficult for your opponents as possible. The player has the ability to swap the two characters at any time in the race, with the idea being that different characters will cause the kart to handle differently, and eight of the game's weapons/items are specific to certain members of the Mario gang.

As you'd expect, the multiplayer mode supports up to four players split-screen, but this time with the added two-character per player twist. You'll be able to race head-to-head with other players on any of the tracks you've unlocked in the single-player game, and fortunately the excellent battle mode will also return with all-new battle arenas! Nintendo also seem keen to push the connectivity of the GameCube, with this being another game to support the broadband adapter which allows multiple GameCubes to be linked together, allowing for the game to be played by up to eight players across several televisions!

There's little doubt that this will be a tremendously fun game when it appears in European stores this October, but the real question is just how good will it be? Will it be able to uproot the mighty Mario Kart 64, which is still a firm favourite around here whenever the N64 gets a dust-off, or even the original SNES Mario Kart which many fans still swear by? Only time will tell, but be sure that we'll be reporting all news on our front page as soon as we get it! In the meantime, here's a video of the game in action at E3, and a collection of nice-looking new screenshots for your visual satisfaction.
