27th May 2003:
Grabbed by the Ghoulies (E3 2003)
Rare shows off another Xbox title - take on spectres, zombies and other sepulchral misfits in an all-new haunted house romp.
Posted by John Grothier - Xbox - UK and Europe

Rare showed off their very first Xbox release, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, at this years E3. The game is best described as a 'haunted house romp', with players taking on spectres, zombies and other sepulchral misfits, within the shadowy depths of Ghoulhaven Hall. The game's central character is Cooper, who is forced to venture inside the haunted hall to try to save his girlfriend who has been spirited away by the ghoulies. (Now that does sound painful, and perhaps a little bit worrying). So now Cooper must explore Ghoulhaven Hall in a frenetic chase through long-standing haunted house tradition, complete with sinister aristocrats, cobweb-choked rooms and a gentlemanly butler, but also with a few Rare twists and surprises thrown into the mix. The gameplay is focused on making progress towards the heart of the house by solving puzzles and defeating enemies in each room Copper discovers. The game's environments are fully interactive, allowing him to use practically anything as a weapon, including most of the furniture and even bits of his fallen foes.

As brave Copper soon finds out there is much more to this ghost story than just rescuing his girlfriend, Ghoulhaven Hall has a few surprises and frights in store for our hero. There are specific heart-pounding frights which might just lay Cooper out flat if you don't help him to overcome the shock, and locked rooms that will only open on completion of one of the Hall's many challenges. Rare promise us that Grabbed by the Ghoulies will be fluid and fast-paced comedy violence all the way when it's released later in the year.
