Until recently, Wario has been involved in a handful of successful solo-adventures on the Game Boy Advance, but his only appearances on next-generation consoles have been cameo roles in titles like Mario Kart and Mario Party. However, that all changed during last year's E3 when his first starring role in a next-generation game was announced in the form of Wario World for the GameCube. Unfortunately, despite a predicted 2002 release date, Nintendo's press office has since gone fairly quiet on the game, and it quietly slipped into 2003 without much of an explanation. Since then, rumours have started up that the game might be dropped completely, but fortunately they've been dispelled by a showing at this year's E3 event and a new release date of this Winter.
Little is actually known about the intracacies of the game, aside from that it will be much more of a traditional platformer than the likes of the Mario games, and will even have a hint of group fighting as Wario uses his fists to deal with swarms of enemies at a time. Once again, his main motivation for doing this is greed, with him having accidently stolen a strange black jewel which is turning his prescious gems into monsters. Those who remember his handheld appearances will be pleased to hear that some of his other abilities will also return, such as being flattened by an enemy to allow him to fit through small holes, or being set on fire to melt ice-based blocks, providing the game with a nice puzzle element too.
Overall, Wario World's concept certainly seems sound, but it remains to be seen whether this will be able to get anywhere near the quality of Nintendo's other main platformer, Mario. However, you can be sure that any further details we get will be posted on the site as soon as they arrive, so check back again shortly! Meanwhile, here's the video trailer for the game straight from E3.
