New screens of Cossacks 2
The sequel to one of the best realtime strategy games in recent years is shaping up nicely, if these early screens are anything to go by.

Cossacks: European Wars was one of the most in-depth and engrossing historial strategy games of its time when it appeared on PC back in 2001, and this was reflected by its success, with pre-orders exceeding those of even the mighty Black and White at one point. Since then, a string of add-ons have been released for the title, such as Art of War and Back to War, and even a spin-off series, American Conquest, has emerged, built around the same engine. However, with the original game beginning to show its age, it was time for the developers, GSC Game Worlds, to start anew, and they've done so with the official sequel, Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars.
Fans of the original can expect the same level of historical accuracy as the first title, but this time with a focus on the 19th Century Napoleonic wars, and all fleshed out in a brand new 3D engine. The game will make use of the latest 3D hardware, exploiting pixel and vertex shaders to create highly realistic environments for the game, while still leaving enough power to have up to 64,000 units on a map simultaneously. Players will be able to take control of armies from France, Britain, Austria, Russia, Prussia, Egypt, totalling 150 unique units and 180 different types of building, and there will even be new factors such as unit morale and fatigue to take into consideration. Of course, multiplayer gaming will be fully supported with both LAN and Internet options allowing for deathmatches, historical battles and 'European Conquest' modes.
These early screenshots indicate that the title is coming along pretty well - we hope to have more details in the run-up to its 2004 release date so check back soon!
